Windows Server 2008 R2 stuck during boot at Applying computer settings…
December 11th, 2009 - 10:46am
Rebooted the server last night and the screen would not get past Applying computer settings… There seemed to be very light disk activity. I discovered that if I rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking and re-enabled the IPv6 on my Local Area Connection, the system would boot normally. I had turned it off earlier but had not rebooted since that change.
Steps:
- Right click on my network connection in the system tray and select Open Network and Sharing Center
- Display the Local Area Connection Status
- Click Properties and make sure Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is checked
- Quit everything and reboot
The only other potential factor was the server was behind a NAT; it could communicate with the local network but could not reach the outside world due to a misconfiguration in the firewall.

Thanks for that, didnt expect that turning off IPv6 would be a problem.

I never, ever would have considered this the problem. This is the first time unchecking IPv6 caused me a problem. You just saved me a ton of problems. Thanks!!

WOW!!!! Thanks a ton. you just saved me hours of debug. I turned off the IPv6 thinking it wouldn’t cause any problems and forgot I had made the change. Life saver.

Been having this problem for a while now, and I’ve been banging my head against a wall trying all sorts of things. The event log is not helpful in this case, apart from pointing to the fact that lots of things fail. IPv6 did the trick nicely. Thing is – I disabled IPv6 months ago, and have only seen this problem in the last few weeks. An addition to your points, though: I use hyper-V and the main (physical) network card only has the Virtual Network Switch protocol enabled, with all the ‘proper’ settings being associated with the Virtual Network card – this is where I had to enable IPv6

You are a god!
Does not make any sense why this happens though.

I was starting to worry when our exchange server would not come up. This fixed our problem. Thank you so much.

I would never have worked this one out! We turned off IPv6 some time ago, server rebooted for an update, and wouldn’t come back up. Thanks – you saved us from re-build hell!
